Roblox has announced that they have more than 100 million active users playing per month. An online sandbox game engine created by the Roblox Corporation and released over a decade ago, Roblox struggled to gain popularity at first, but soon found itself with a small but dedicated community that seems to grow exponentially as the years go by.
For the uninitiated, Roblox is less of a traditional game and more of a creation tool along similar lines as products like RPG Maker, Little Big Planet, and the recently released Super Mario Maker 2. Using Roblox Studio, players can create, modify, and sell their own unique games, experiences, and items, with the current number of such totaling upwards of 69 million games from over 2 million different developers. Many of the games created in Roblox have gone on to become quite popular, including Jailbreak and Welcome to Bloxburg, and most are geared toward children.
In a recent blog post, the Roblox Corporation expressed amazement at the amount of users they were now experiencing, and showed gratitude toward the many creators that choose to use their platform. To help celebrate their achievement, the company has released what they’re calling a Goldenrow Shoulder Accessory, which creators can download for free to use in their own projects, and resembles two stacks of gold bars fixed around a character’s shoulders. This limited-time offer expires on August 16, so Roblox fans that want to show their 100 million user pride only have a few days left to snatch theirs up.
Roblox has received many industry awards and accommodations, as other online platforms by Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft have all come under fire for their services. The Roblox Corporation was listed on Inc. 5000‘s list of America’s Fastest Growing Private Companies in 2017, and it also received the Tech & Innovation Award from the San Francisco Business Times in the same year. Roblox has been consistently ranked as one of the top online entertainment platforms for users under the age of 18 based on average monthly visits and time spent in-game, with an average of 1.2 billion engagement hours each month. They even have their own unique toy line produced by Jazwares, which features popular created characters, and includes codes that can be redeemed for in-game items.
With 28 billion logged hours played since 2008, and a recent mention in Fortune as one of the best workplaces in the San Francisco Bay area, there’s no reason to think that the Roblox Corporation has any plans of slowing down. While they’ve not yet reached Grand Theft Auto levels of popularity, right now they’re happily celebrating their 100 million active users, and if the current trend continues, it won’t be long before that number doubles in size. It was only April of this year, after all, that Roblox was 90 million strong, and gaining 10 million fans in four months is something any company would be proud of.
